I fall asleep listening to Stephen Fry read me an HP book every night, it’s the only way I can fall asleep, one of my quirks and why I have my own room cause M falls asleep to the sound of nothingness. The movies are great but they leave out a lot, most of which are the Sorting Hat’s songs, they’re cute and often glossed over so I don’t think we always appreciate how awesome the advice in the lyrics are. So here are six of the best bits from his song in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire:
1. HATCH A DARING PLAN!
They shared a wish, a hope, a dream,
They hatched a daring plan
To educate young sorcerers
Thus Hogwarts School began.
We are often so scared to share our wishes and goals in case we don’t reach them or others judge them but here’s the thing to remember; by working together and being open and honest about how you want to change the world is an amazing thing! Without the four founders, our favorite school in the world would still be a dream. Dreaming big is the first step to making the world a better place!
2. BE YOURSELF (You are awesome!)
Now each of these four founders
Formed their own house, for each
Did value different virtues
In the ones they had to teach.
We all have those thoughts, when we think we’re a little too odd or “out there.” But hey, we need to embrace our differences and celebrate that we’re individuals! Remember that everyone favors different qualities, so if it doesn’t work out with one person then it will with another. Don’t try and fit in, your tribe is out there and they will accept you for who you are not for who you think you should be.
3. ROAR LOUD AND PROUD
By Gryffindor, the bravest were
Prized far beyond the rest;
Embrace the lion within you and make Gryffindor proud – even if it is just to have the courage to visit the dentist or in my case, sign up to get your degree even when you doubt yourself.
4. MAKE YOUR BRAIN YOUR BEST FRIEND
For Ravenclaw, the cleverest
Would always be the best;
Being clever isn’t just about how many books you read and how many questions you can answer correctly. This is also about being willing to learn and using it in the other aspects of your life which is something I’ve been trying to teach Fysh more of this year as he’s struggling with his school work and was too obsessed (like me) with trying to not get anything wrong. We learn from our mistakes and even that is considered clever. A bit of Ravenclaw organisation and curiosity can be the answer, which is why last night I was looking at organisation cases for my desk hahaha.
5. SHOW YOUR PASSION
For Hufflepuff, hard workers were
Most worthy of admission;
They say (whoever “they” are) that hard work pays off, and you know what? They are actually right. When you put effort into your passion you’ll really be surprised at the good things that come your way and how things start to slot into place and happen.
6. EMBRACE YOUR AMBITION
And power-hungry Slytherin
Loved those of great ambition.
“Power-hungry” is mostly taken as a negative attribute, which is probably why so many people think Slytherin aren’t a house to be in. Rather focus on the ambition instead. We all need a bit of direction in our lives, so why not use our ambition to find a direction of our choosing. And remember that not all Slytherins are bad. Some of the bad witches and wizards were from Gryffindor as well…
I hope that this is the sign you need to go follow that big dream. You’ve got this!
With all of that in mind I’m going to go and make notes for the exam I’m writing on Thursday xoxo
