Yesterday we got two of the tiniest damn caterpillars I’ve ever seen from another HS mom in the area – butterfly caterpillars! And we have a lemon tree so we have more than enough leaves for them to eat. Which also makes me wonder just how many of them are on our tree and I’ve never noticed. I know that we have several caterpillars on the plants in the pool and now that I think about it they’re probably also butterflies.
Either way, we are now adding lepidopterology to our daily learning schedule. Yup, we’re learning all about the common South African butterflies, their life cycles, structures etc etc etc. They’re actually really fascinating creatures and I’ve sourced websites that will show us in 3D what’s happening inside the cocoon once they form them.
I think the best part is we have no idea what it’s going to look like when it “hatches” as South Africa has quite a few butterflies native to it and for all we know it could turn out to be a moth. Doubtful but you never know.
We’re now on the hunt for an empty fish tank we can use till they fly off as apparently that works best but might just end up using a giant box, tank would be better though cause Fysh could see what’s going on all the time. Maybe I’ll check gumtree or ask on freecycle :)
