Healthier ways to satisfy that sweet tooth

Fysh is ALWAYS HUNGRY! I swear he has worms (he doesn’t, we do the deworm thing often as we have pets) and most of the time I’m hearing “do we have anything sweet in the house?” which of course we don’t most of the time because we tend to eat it soon as we get it – we really are horrid at keeping things for later haha.

We save quite a bit by doing our shopping on a Wednesday when food lovers does their Wacky Wednesday Specials which means we can have a little extra treat here and there but we’ve started doing healthier alternatives to sweet things so I thought I’d share some of them. (We still do the odd cupcake or donut here and there because denial = binging).

  1. Choco-nut popcorn 
    Add 1 tablespoon melted peanut butter and a dusting of cocoa powder. Crunchy and the perfect amount of sweetness! You can swap the peanut butter for Nutella if you have it or want to.
  2. Frozen chocolate banana
    Peel a banana, cut into two equal halves, and freeze. Once solid, take out and roll in melted dark chocolate. While the chocolate’s still melty, roll in whichever crunchy topping you like – sprinkles, nuts, muesli etc… Return to the freezer until the chocolate is set.
  3. PB&J
    If you make it with a healthy bread choice it’s not really bad for you. We like it on our banana bread that we make. Or sometimes grandpa’s beer bread.
  4. Fruit ice lollies
    Puree watermelon chunks and some lemon juice, freeze, and enjoy. If it’s not watermelon season, try any other juicy fruit: Pears, peaches, or berries with a touch of apple juice for base will all make great pops.
  5. Home Made Ice cream
    I make our own ice cream (we have an ice cream maker) but I do it with double cream yoghurt or coconut cream and we don’t add extra sugar we do add a bit of honey sometimes and then whatever “flavour” we feel like. Sometimes it’s cookie dough, sometimes it’s fresh berries etc.
  6. Frozen Grapes
    I freeze a lot of weird things (those mallow easter eggs are best frozen) and along with bananas, melon and berries I actually prefer grapes frozen, so does Fysh and when it’s summer it’s always nice having a cold tasty treat.
  7. Hot Cocoa
    Sometimes you want the chocolate taste. heat up milk or a milk alternative (I prefer coconut milk) and add a bit of cocoa and cinnamon. TASTY! And less sugar than the hot chocolate you get in the store.
  8. Apple Ring Pancakes
    1 cup flour | 2 tblsp white sugar | 2 tsp baking powder  | 1 tsp salt  | 1 egg beaten | 1 cup milk |  2 tablespoons vegetable oil. Super quick and if you trust your kid they can even make it themselves. For the apple twist, peel and core the apple then cut it in rings and dip it in the batter before you put it in the pan. Sprinkle with cinnamon and honey.
  9. Banana butter rice cakes
    Fysh and I are funny with bananas. Sometimes we love them, mostly we don’t. But add peanutbutter or dark chocolate and we’ll eat em happily.  So I like to mash them and add pb and use it as a “butter” on rice cakes :)
  10. Apple Sarmie
    Core your apple and cut into rings. Smear with peanutbutter and add crushed nuts, chocolate sprinkles, 100’s and 1000s. Pretty much whatever takes your fancy.
